RECAP: Tech takes down # 18 Northwestern, 4-2

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Kendall Fritz limited No. 18 Northwestern (10-4) to just four hits while striking out seven as the Red Raiders (5-10) took down the Wildcats 4-2 at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Sunday morning.

Payton Jackson went 2-for-3 from the plate with one double, two runs scored and one RBI. Five different Red Raiders recorded hits as Tech tallied six total, four of which resulted in RBI.

The Red Raiders opened the scoring, getting two runs across in the bottom of the third. Peyton Blythe doubled over the first base bag to get things going and Jackson followed with a double over the head of the left fielder to score Blythe. After Carson Armijo walked to put two runners on with two outs, Ellie Bailey singled up the middle to score Jackson. Armijo was tagged out in a run down to end the inning.

Tech added one run the next inning to make it 3-0 with an RBI single from Abbie Orrick. Riley Ehlen led off the inning with a single and Molly Grumbo moved the runner with a sac bunt, reaching safely at first on an errant throw and moving the runner to third. Orrick singled through the right side on the next at bat to score Page Mindedahlwho was pinch running for Ehlen.

The Red Raiders added their fourth run of the game in the fifth inning as Jackson started off the inning with a single, her second hit of the game. Armijo was hit by a pitch to put two runners on, and a wild pitch moved Jackson to third and Demi Elder, running for Armijo, on second. Ehlen hit a sac fly deep to left field to bring in Jackson to give Tech a 4-0 lead.

Fritz (4-3) held the Wildcats scoreless with just two hits until allowing a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to cut the Red Raider lead in half, but a ground out to Riley Love ended the Northwestern rally to give Tech the 4-2 win.


  • Kendall Fritz pitched her fifth complete game of the season; she is 3-2 when going the distance for the Red Raiders. In her last four starts, she has walked just three batters while striking out 22.
  • Payton Jackson extended her reached base streak to eight games, recording hits in each of the last three games.
  • The Red Raiders pick up their first ranked win of the season and the first since taking down No. 10 Texas on May 15, 2021 in the Big 12 Tournament.
  • Tech’s run in the fifth inning came off Northwestern ace Danielle Williams, just the eighth earned run she has allowed all season in 59.0 innings pitched.


The Red Raiders return to Lubbock for the home opener on Friday, March 4 at 6:00 pm against North Texas. Tech host North Texas and Southern University at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic March 4-6 at Rocky Johnson Field.
